SteamWorld Dig 2 is a video game in the SteamWorld series, developed and published by Image & Form, for Nintendo Switch. It is a sequel to SteamWorld Dig, and marks the return of that game's Metroidvania-style gameplay. It stars Dorothy, a character that previously appeared as an NPC, exploring the mines near the town of El Machino.
After the mysterious disappearance of Rusty, Dorothy decides to move to the town of El Machino in search with "an unlikely companion".
After being hinted at for a few months, SteamWorld Dig 2 was announced in a Nintendo Switch Nindies Presentation on 28 February 2017 as a timed-exclusive for the Nintendo Switch, set for a summer release. It had begun development around the begginning of 2016, following the release of SteamWorld Heist.
As previously mentioned, this game marks the return of the Metroidvania/Spelunky/Dig Dug-style gameplay that was in the original, which consists of exploring mines and finding ores and gems to sell. The game is a lot longer than SteamWorld Dig, with multiple bosses rather than just one. The game also features customisable gear, and in the Switch version, HD Rumble support.
- The game was originally leaked in a European Union funding document in mid-2016, under the name 'SteamWorld Quest'. It turned out though, that this was just a 'red herring' to keep the game a secret so it could be a surprise when it was announced.
